NOVEL EFFECT

Exploring brand evolution with a startup.

Exploring brand evolution with a startup.

PROBLEM
Upon starting work with the startup Novel Effect, a free app that provides interactive storytime experiences for kids and families, I was asked to help evolve the existing brand into something more fun and modern, but also family-friendly, that could compete with the existing marketplace. (Scroll to bottom for their previous logo.)

SOLUTION
I worked with leadership to understand the goals for the brand. We worked through various exercises until we landed on a bright and clean concept, with hand-touched elements to add friendliness and approachability. A stacked logo with an evolution of their existing microphone mark (+ an added smile!) helped to retain the integrity of the original brand. Illustrated supporting elements paired with photography brings the interactivity of the product to the forefront and a cheerful, "muted rainbow" color palette helps tie it all together.

Notes on Logo Process

In this particular exercise, the stakeholders were set on an iteration of a wordmark fairly quickly so we spent some time playing around with different logo marks to compliment it. Here are some of the different options we explored.

The new logo became an evolution of the existing one with microphone iconography that sits to the left of a stacked wordmark.

Changing the mark to lowercase added to the friendly feel and including the smile on the microphone "amped" up the fun!
